Four 2026 Studies Show Authenticity Is Beating Prestige
From Singapore to the world’s richest households, four 2026 studies trace where consumer trust is going. Quality, belonging and neutral sources lead, and prestige trails.
● In brief
Four studies published this year point to the same shift in luxury consumer trust. In Singapore and Malaysia, 46% of respondents said they most trust brands that feel authentic and relatable, while just 14% chose brands that feel aspirational and premium.
Prestige becomes a weaker shortcut. In luxury, quality leads at 47%, well ahead of prestige and status at 18%. Among the wealthy, Team One found that 51% of global affluents now prioritise friendship over status. BCG and Altagamma measured a net trust score of 29 percentage points for AI tools, ranking them fourth among the main information sources for luxury, on a par with traditional web search. In the creator economy, 42% of creators report tension between the content their audiences want and the content brands ask them to produce.
● Why it matters
These are different populations and different measures. But together they point to a broader change in what carries credibility.
- Trust follows proof. Consumers increasingly value what they can experience or verify: quality, usefulness, expertise and recommendations from people they trust.
- Paid persuasion is under pressure. When commissioned content moves too far from what audiences actually want, the relationship between reach and credibility begins to weaken.
- Independent information gains value. The rise of AI and other non-brand-controlled discovery channels suggests that consumers are increasingly willing to look outside the brand itself for answers.
- Prestige becomes a weaker shortcut. In luxury consumer behaviour, prestige can still attract attention. But provenance, craft knowledge, product quality and long relationships are harder to manufacture quickly.
- Authenticity becomes scarce. It accumulates through behaviour, consistency and relationships over time. That is precisely why it is becoming valuable.
