People Moves: Delvaux, Pucci, Chanel and Santa Maria Novella

Delvaux and Pucci promote insiders to chief executive, while Chanel and Santa Maria Novella give creative roles to a make-up artist and a design studio.

Four appointments in late September show how luxury houses are filling their top jobs: chief executives come from inside the group, creative roles go to makers. Richemont moves a Cartier veteran to Delvaux, LVMH a Louis Vuitton product director to Pucci, Chanel names the painter-trained make-up artist Lucia Pieroni, and Santa Maria Novella hands its creative direction to the design studio Formafantasma.

● Why it matters

Two kinds of trust are at work. For the chief executive roles, the groups rely on their own benches: Richemont and LVMH chose people who already know their systems, Delvaux’s new head from Cartier, Pucci’s from the product side of Louis Vuitton. For the creative roles, the houses rely on makers whose work is judged by the object itself, a face or a bottle, before any campaign.

For smaller houses such as Delvaux, Pucci and Santa Maria Novella, the choices point to their next phase: growth through product discipline and a sharper identity, led by people who have seen from the inside how the largest houses work.
